수덕사 Sudeoksa

'수덕사 대웅전은 고려 충렬왕 34년(1308년)에 건립된 것으로 현재까지 정확한 창건연대를 알고 있는 가장 오래된 목조건축이다.'

우리아파는 88년에 건설되어 약 40년 정도 된 낡고 오래된 아파트다. 콘크리스로 철근까지 넣어 아주 단단하게 지었다고 하지만 100년을 이어가기는 쉽지 않다. 그런데...1000년을 지켜온 수덕사의 대웅전 이야기를 읽고 감탄을 금치 못 했다. 나무로 쌓아올린 집이 이렇게 오랜 세월 단단하게 한 자리를 지킬 수 있었다니...단순한 맞배지붕, 주심포양식에 배흘림기둥까지 화려하지도 위용을 뽑내지도 않고 우직하게 그 자리를 지켜가고 있다. 

'튼튼한 부재의 정직한 드러냄이야말로 이 집이 천년이 가도 끄떡없음을 자랑하는 견실성의 핵심요소라고 나는 생각하고 있다'

빼고 또 빼고 나의 살까지 드러내지만 어떠한 일에도 흔들리지 않는 묵직함이 대웅전에는 담겨있다. 사람도 이처럼 단순하지만 내면이 확고하고 단단해져야 겠구나 생각해 본다. 치장을 하고 화려함을 더할 수록 가벼워 보이는 재미있는 이야기. 마음 속에 담아가야지...

Sudeoksa Daeungjeon Hall was built in the 34th year of King Chungnyeol’s reign during the Goryeo Dynasty (1308). It is the oldest wooden structure in Korea with a clearly documented date of construction.

Our apartment was built in 1988, making it around 40 years old. Though it was constructed solidly with reinforced concrete, it’s hard to imagine it lasting even a hundred years.
But when I read the story of Sudeoksa’s Daeungjeon Hall, which has stood for over a thousand years, I couldn’t help but be amazed.
A wooden building, surviving centuries, quietly holding its ground.
Its simple matbae (gable roof), jusimpo style brackets, and subtly curved baehullim columns do not boast of grandeur. And yet, this unadorned structure stands firm and proud through time.

“I believe that the honest expression of sturdy, minimal components is the core reason why this building has withstood a thousand years without faltering.”

There is a quiet weight in Daeungjeon’s form—one that has been stripped down to its essence, even revealing its bare frame.
And still, it does not waver.

Reading this, I realized: I want to become like that.
Simple. Unshaken. With a firm and solid inner foundation.

The more we decorate and embellish, the more we risk appearing light and hollow.
What an interesting and meaningful truth to carry in the heart.
