✍️ Calligraphy Starts with Just a Few Simple Tools
To begin writing beautiful letters, you don’t need much—just a few simple tools.
If you’re just getting started with traditional calligraphy, the following basics are more than enough:
🖤 Ink
In the past, we used to grind ink sticks on an inkstone. These days, ready-to-use liquid ink makes things much easier.
🖌️ Brush
For smaller writing, a fine-tipped brush works best. Choose the brush size depending on your desired letter size.
📄 Rice Paper (Hanji)
For practice, a half sheet is perfect. I usually cut mine into 35cm x 35cm squares.
📍 Paperweight (Munjin)
It holds the paper steady while you write.
🖤 Mat
This prevents ink from seeping through and staining the surface underneath.
🫖 Small Dish
Use a stable, small container to hold the ink while you work.
When creating final pieces, you may need additional materials,
but for everyday practice, these basic tools are all you need.
These supplies can be found online at calligraphy stores,
or in person at my favorite shops in Insadong, Seoul.

Once you’ve gathered your tools,
you’re ready to begin writing words that hold your heart.
Slowly, gently—
as you focus on yourself and the movement of each stroke,
you may find a quiet space within you that’s been waiting all along.
Would you like to write with me?
Today, gift yourself
a single, warm word in your day.
