창랑지수(滄浪之水) Why does clean hat strings enter some water, while filthy feet enter others?

滄浪之水清兮，可以濯我纓；滄浪之水濁兮，可以濯我足。
"창랑의 물이 맑으면 내 갓끈을 씻고, 창랑의 물이 흐리면 내 발을 씻는다."

왜 어떤 물에는 깨끗한 갓끈이 들어오고, 어떤 물에는 불결한 발이 들어온다고 생각하는가? 

그것은 물, 자기가 자초한 것이다. 자기가 깨끗하면 어찌 발이 들어올 수 있겠느냐

여기서 물은 내가 아닐까 생각해본다. 좋은 사람을 끌어당기는 나의 맑음. 내가 좋은 사람일 때 좋은 사람들과 함께 할 수 있음을 의미하는 것 이리라 생각한다. 나는 맑은 물이었는지 ..발을 담그려다가도 그 맑음에 차마 발을 담글 수 없도록 갈고 닦아 나를 맑디 맑은 사람이 되도록 노력해야겠다. 

그동안 독서모임에서 서양철학자들만 관심을 가졌는데 동양철학에도 관심이 간다. 논어도 맹자도 한번 읽어보고 싶다.

It is because of the water itself—it brings it upon itself. If the water is clean, how could dirty feet enter?

I believe that the "water" here represents myself. My clarity attracts good people. When I am a good person, I can surround myself with good people. Have I been like clear water? I must refine and cultivate myself so that I become so pure that no one would dare to taint me.

Until now, I have only focused on Western philosophers in my book club, but now I find myself drawn to Eastern philosophy as well. I want to read The Analects and Mencius someday.
