종교와 학교의 권력 The Power Structures of Religion and Education

같은 시간에, 같은 장소에 사람을 모아 한 방향을 바라보게 하면, 그 시선이 모이는 곳에 권력이 생긴다.

예배당의 긴 의자, 길고 좁은 공간 끝에 놓인 십자가, 화려한 제의를 입은 신부님의 느린 걸음과 복잡한 예식, 장엄한 성가대의 음악, 그리고 반복되는 앉았다 일어섰다의 기도…

너무 자연스럽고 당연하게 받아들였던 이 모든 요소들이, 사실은 권력을 위한 의도된 연출이었다고 생각하니, 문득 종교란 무엇인가라는 근본적인 질문으로 이어졌다.
정해진 시간과 공간 속에서 반드시 참여해야만 하는 종교의 시스템. 그 안에서 나의 자유는 억제되고, 나는 그 본질에 대해 진지하게 생각해본 적이 있었는가 되묻게 된다.

같은 맥락에서, 교육 또한 마찬가지다.
똑같은 옷을 입고, 같은 공간에서 자신을 낮춘 채 선생님의 지도를 받는 학생들.
그 안에는 보이지 않는 권력의 구조가 존재한다.

하지만 지금은 권위와 권력이 점점 희미해지고 있는 시대다. 넘치는 정보, 값싼 온라인 강의, AI의 발달 속에서 교육자는 더 이상 지식의 전달자로만 머무를 수 없다.
이제 교육자는 대화와 소통을 통해 학생의 잠재성을 발견하고, 그것을 드러낼 수 있도록 교육을 큐레이팅해 주는 존재로 진화해야 한다.

그렇다면,
우리는 어떻게 해야 권력이라는 껍데기를 걷어내고 본질에 다가설 수 있을까?

The long pews of a chapel, the narrow and elongated layout drawing the eye to the cross at the front, the ornate vestments of the priest, his slow and deliberate steps, the elaborate rituals, the choir’s solemn music, the repeated standing and sitting during prayer...

All of it once felt so natural, so unquestionable.
But realizing that these elements were intentionally designed and orchestrated for power led me to a deeper question: What is religion, truly?
Within this fixed system of time and space, where participation is mandatory and freedom is restrained, I began to wonder—have I ever truly reflected on the essence of religion?

Similarly, education mirrors this dynamic.
Students in identical uniforms, lowering themselves before the teacher’s authority in a shared space—here too, invisible structures of power are at work.

Yet today, authority and power are gradually fading.
In a world overflowing with information and cheap online courses, educators can no longer remain mere transmitters of knowledge.
Modern educators must offer something more—value that emerges through dialogue and meaningful interaction with students. They must become curators of the learning experience, guiding each student toward realizing their unique potential.

So then,
When we strip away the shell of power, how can we truly approach the essence?
